South America and Africa Rock Evidence

I think that these columns show further proof of continental drift. When South America and Africa were part if Pangea, they had the same layers of rock formation. When the two continents split, the old rock laters remained, while the new rock layers formed on top of them. When Paleantologists found the similarity in rock formation, they found further evidence that these continents were once connected!!

Demography: 'So What?' Impact on the Future

1) What skills did you learn in this unit?

a. Ability to accurately graph numerical data.

b. Ability to read/interpret graphs

c. Using statistics to explain the past and predict the future.

2) What is the relevance of Demography to my life and how will it impact my life now and in the future?

We need to know about demography in our lives so that we can be aware of the world around us. We know that the population is increasing at a very steep rate right now, however we have reached peak child meaning by the end of this century, the population of children will stop increasing.

Population growth also has some negatives. For example, more people would need food, so we have to find more efficient ways to distribute food equally to people around the world. The impact on our environment will be very large because more and more people would be using more resources. For example, people might cut down trees because they are trying to invent a new item, but at the same time, they are harming the environment.

It will impact me and other people because we will have more advanced technology. For example, as the population increases, many more people would buy a car, however if a majority of the population had a car, then Global Warming would increase. Instead, we would probably have electric cars. There will also be more people to invent many things, and also many new ideas put out in the world for ore people to explore. We will live longer because the medical care will improve. We might even find more cures to diseases!

My Superpowers

My top power is perseverance. I feel that this is effortless in most situations for me. When anyone given a task, I do not ignore it, but I persevere until I complete it, and I give it my best shot. I think that perseverance will help me succeed because I will face many challenges. When I do, I need to face, them, not turn back. It will also help me give my best work and not just accept the task half heartedly. Creativity is also one of my strong points. I enjoy coming up with new ideas and using them in my tasks. My vivid imagination helps me because I am able to make my thoughts unique and develop them. I am grateful that I have this trait because another person might not have the same ideas as mine, and I am unique. I like to shine in a crowd, like a pebble in a beach of sand.

I wish that I had zest as one of my top 5 characteristics because I want to be able to light up a room with my energy. I do not want to live my life and accomplish nothing, but live it as an adventure. I think that this will make things seem more interesting and I will be excited to learn new things instead of ignoring all the opportunities that I receive. I think that this characteristic will also help me gain more friends because they will be interested in a person who is energetic, not a person sitting quietly in the corner of the room. I would also like to develop a better sense of humor. I this would also help me make more friends and take the obstacles that come my way casually. I think that this will open a new window in my future and help me succeed.

TCK Video and Reflection

I think that being a TCK or  third culture kid is beneficial. You get to experience and gain more knowledge about many different cultures. In our video, we explained how TCK children might get confused about where is home, and how they have an association with many cultures, but they do not feel like they belong to a certain ethnicity. We gave an example of some TCK kids in an airport and how they form an acquaintance with each other.

Reflection Questions - How Old is the Ocean Floor?

  • Where are the oldest parts of the oceans?
The oldest parts of the ocean are located beside the continents. This is because in the middle of the mid ocean ridges, there are active volcanoes. These volcanoes erupt on the floor of the ocean. When the magma touches the cold ocean water, it cools creating new rock. So, the rock which was in that place before gets pushed outwards, towards the continents. So therefore, the oldest rocks are located beside the continents.
  • Do the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, and Arctic ocean basins have the same age and patterns?
Yes, they do share the same age pattern since the oldest rocks are located beside the continents. As you move outward, towards the middle of the ocean, the rocks become younger.
  • How does the age of the ocean floor compare with the age of rocks on the continents?
The continents are older than the ocean floor because some of the ocean floor gets recycled by a process called subduction. In this process, the seafloor gets recycled by sliding under the continents, and into the mantle. Therefore, new ocean floor can be formed, however on the Earth, old rock can remain for a very long time.

  • These questions were the same as the questions in your pre-test. Reflect on what answers, if any, you changed after completing these activities. What did you learn from these activities with GeoMapApp? Did you need a lot of help from friends or your parents or teacher? What do you think helps you learn new material in science class?
I think that after this activity, I understood and learned more about the ocean floor. Most of my answers changed because I initially did not know where the youngest or oldest part of the ocean was located. After looking at the maps and comprehending what they meant, I was able to answer the questions accurately. I think looking at these maps on Geomap App visually helps me learn more because I get a visual idea of what is going on. I like that we have to comprehend what we see and the questions help everything flow together making it easier to learn the new information. I did not require much help from my teachers, but I did need to clarify a few questions to make sure that I was going on the right track.

Perpetual Motion Video

Hi! My name is Jayashree A., and this is a video of my playing Perpetual Motion from the Suzuki Violin part one book.

Art Portfolio Blog Post

1) What was the best part of this assignment?

I think that the best part of this assignment was painting. I like blending the colors and letting my imagination flow. I enjoyed playing with the text and creating a variety of objects. This helped me because I was able to create a piece which was not plain or boring, but vivid and detailed.

2) If you could do this assignment again what would you do differently?

I would define my shapes a bit more, because when I painted my flowers, the edges got blurry. To fix this problem, I think that I should have more control over my brush. If I do this in the future, I think that I will be able to create better artwork.

Age of the Ocean Floor Pre-test

1) Where are the oldest parts of the oceans?

I think that the oldest part of the oceans are located in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans because Pangea might have been located beside or near theses oceans.

2) Do the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian and Arctic Oceans have the same age patterns?

I think that they do have the same age patterns because the oceans are somewhat connected to each other.

3) How does the age of the ocean compare withe the continents?

I think that the ocean is older than the land because the very first organisms on Earth might have lived in the ocean.

Social Media Refelctions

Social Media Reflections - Jayashree

In the present day, Social Media has a huge impact on us, and our lives. Social Media is used as a way for people to keep in touch with each other, even when they cannot meet in person. People can also socialize with their friends, and catch up on current events in each other's lives.

Social Media can be very advantageous in a superfluous amount of ways. For example, my friend posted Malala's story on facebook. It inspired me to do something for the community. Even . For example, if your best friend moves to a different country, you can continue to keep in touch using social media, such as Skype. You can catch up with other people and their lives by chatting or texting with them. You could also get an exposure to different topics on facebook or twitter.

Though Social Media can very helpful in many ways, there are also some negatives to it as well. Many people get so engrossed in Social Media, they do not realize how much time they spend on it. Many teenagers abuse their right to use social media and post inappropriate photos or text. Social media also decreases face to face connection and emotionally sharing ones feelings. Some teens and adults rely completely on their phones or electronic devices to convey their messages, so this decreases the need for face to face conversation. Also, when someone texts or posts, you do not know their emotional response, so sometimes, this can lead to misunderstanding between friends.

I am happy that I do not have a social media account because there are many risks and dangers online. For example,  someone could hack your account and gain access to all your personal information. My parents and I feel it is better for me not to have a social media account at such a young age.

If I did have a social media account, then I would create a thoughtful, intelligent, and humorous image. I like to be thoughtful and post items which appeal to me, at the same time remain lighthearted by not stressing on a topic too much. For example, I enjoy classical Indian dance, or Bharatanatyam. So, I might post an inspiring story about the story of a famous dancer!

I think that Social Media is a great tool for communocatin , however they have to remain cognizant of the risks and dangers as well!
