Finding Heights of Objects Using Similarity

Finding Heights of Objects Using Similarity

Work for the Problem
Pictures of us Collecting Data :

In this activity, we used a meter stick to find the length of a tall pole using shadows. To do this, we collected the length of the meter stick, shadow of the meter stick, and the shadow of the pole. My math working above shows how we used proportions to find the length of the tall pole.

Portrait Photography Unit - Art 7

Reflection Questions for Portrait Photography Unit

1) I took this photo along with some of my friends. My inspiration for this photo graph was to somehow take plants or nature and incorporate that into my photograph. We initially tried to do this with some of the plants nearby. We did not uproot any plants, therefore, it was very difficult to get the picture I desired. So we took a leaf that was lying on the floor, and used for my picture. I focused the camera on my friend, and the picture turned out to be very creative. This picture is a frame inside of a frame picture. This means that there is a second frame inside the main frame of the camera. After I took this picture, I did some editing to it. I cropped a few parts out of the picture and very slightly edited some of the lighting behind it.
This is my final photograph:

2) This is my Exposure Photograph. Exposure is how much light you let into a picture. This picture is closest to "0" in exposure. An overexposed photograph lets a lot of light in. Therefore, it sets a more energetic mood. An underexposed photograph lets less light in. Therefore, it sets a moody, dark, and gloomy mood.

This is an example of a picture taken in exposure close to "0."

3) I think that my reflection picture is one of the best photos I took. In this photo, I used a mirror to create a reflection of me taking a picture. I feel as though this is creative and my angles and lighting suite this picture very well.
Here is my picture:

4) the background and the lighting are very vital because they set a mood for the viewers. If you take a picture in a dark place with surroundings that look unfamiliar or haunted, then the viewers might feel "scared." On the other hand, if you take a picture in a bright surrounding with a pleasant background (such as flowers) then the viewers might feel "happy or joyful."  This can play an important role in how the audience views the pictures, and what kind of mood the artist wants to set. For example, this picture below sets a slightly dark atmosphere. This is because only half of the the person (or student's) face is lit. The rest of the surroundings are dark. I also made this picture black and white, so it adds a touch to the dark atmosphere.
Here is the picture:

Art Keva Plank Blog Post

Art Keva Plank Reflection

This is an example of Cantilever

Summative Works:
Static Form:

Static form was slightly easier to build. This form usually has a solid base and a stable structure. We made a hexagonal shape form he base and slowly tarted to narrow in the shape. Then we set some planks vertically and then built a triangular prism on top. This form is very straight forward with definite shapes. We really enjoyed building this!

Dynamic Form:

This form took imagination and perseverance to build. This type of structure does not have a solid structure and "plays with your eyes." My team mate and I attempted to build a "bridge like" structure. We first made our horizontal structures and made cantilever to connect the two. Our structure fell down a few times, however we finally managed to stabilize the structure and finish the masterpiece. We got inspired to build this by looking at a dynamic building online. It was a curved structure, so we just made our structure look more like a bridge.

Reflection Questions

1) My favorite part of this assignment was using my creativity to build amazing structures. I especially liked the dynamic form and cantilever because we needed to be careful and use our imagination to come up with a wonderful idea. Then we need to see how to actually build the structure. Each time, I would come up with a different time, from part of a castle to a house!

2) Keva planks can enhance creativity because you have to come up with different designs for your structures. Many different people have various an creative structures of their own. We had to do the same when we were building our own structures!

3) In Cantilever, we used some planks to weight some keva planks in order to keep the structure from falling. If we kept a block in an awkward position where it is going to fall, then we can use the weight of another block to support it. So we would put a few planks on top it it to keep it from falling. We created many masterpieces using cantilever in our class!

Understanding of Effective Communication

          Understanding of Effective Communication

I was at my art table working diligently on my art project at my Elementary school. I had just skipped third grade and I was into my first week of 4th. We were making some arts and crafts and I was very occupied in my work. Our art teacher put a set of supplies on the table, and we were told to share them. I reached for the pair of scissors sitting on the table. I did not realize that another girl at the table also reached for the scissors simultaneously. She was shy, so she did not say anything, instead patiently waited for me to finish. The person next to her said, "That was very mean of you Jayashree! You know she is older than you!" Since I skipped a grade, I was the youngest one in our class. This girl took advantage of that and continuously tried to pull me down. I became very frustrated with her. I said, "Well first of all, this is none of your business. Second of all, I did not know that she was reaching for the scissors at the same time." I continued with my work, and so the girl gave me a dirty look and turned away. That day in Social Studies class, our teacher chose groups for us. I got stuck in the group with the bully. She said, "You go first, then you and then you. Jayashree can go last because she is the youngest." I became very pissed off and irritated. I told her that, "Just because I am the youngest does not mean that I have to go last. I am now in 4th grade just like all of you." The rest of the people in my group supported what I was saying, so the bully could not say anything more. The next day, I sat at a different table and made new friends. They did not pull me down just because of my age. I was able to have a much more pleasant conversation with this group of girls.

I think that this method of simply staying away from the bully is useful because I ran into no further problems, and it was a positive outcome for both of us. I stopped getting bullied, and the bully no longer bothered me because she was cognizant that I was not going to put up with her.

The book that cracked open reading for me

The Book that cracked open Reading for me!

I was walking down the rows of a library, and my eyes fell on a book that looked appealing to me. It was Nancy Drew holding a flashlight going up a set of stairs in a setting which looked like a haunted house. I ran to the counter and quickly checked out the book. I was boiling with excitement as I turned to the first page of the novel. I became so engrossed with the book so from the moment I picked up the book, I simply could not put it down. I felt the same intimidation that Nancy felt as she searched for clues, the threat in the air whenever there was a mystery, and the excitement in she when she solved a mystery. I loved the authors tone, Carolyn Keene, as she told the story. One by one she would reveal the clues and Nancy would try to decipher them. I was so intrigued by this book that I picked the next books in the series. I feel as though this book cracked open reading for me because after I read Nancy Drew, I asked my teachers for more suggestions for great books. It helped me become a more advanced reader and get a new taste of many genres. My vast interest in reading began with this wonderful fictional novel!

Drawing Objects Found in my Locker

Reverse Value Drawings - Reflection

1) Reverse Value is like Optical Illusion. It plays with the retina of your eye. You can see it as 3D shapes. For this assignment, we used ink, brushes, white-out, jelly role pen sharpies, and colored pencils.

Answers for Reflection questions :

1) I think that the most challenging part of this assignment was to ensure that you reversed the value of the objects properly. For example, you could accidentally color an object white, when it is supposed to be black. I feel as though this assignment requred you to think before you started to color.

2)
pinterest.com

I like how this image plays with your retina. It looks like there are two spirals like shapes that look like tornadoes, but really they are just curves black and white lines. I like how they provided more space between the black and white lines of the spirals rather than the background. This makes the spirals show out more than the background.

3)

I chose to emphasize me doing a Bharatanatyam Pose. I have been learning Bharatanatyam (Classical Indian Dance) from a very young age and I have a lot if interest int this art form. I enjoy performing in front or large crowds and showing the audience my skills and talents. I think that this represents my self confidence and my love for dance.

South America and Africa Rock Evidence

I think that these columns show further proof of continental drift. When South America and Africa were part if Pangea, they had the same layers of rock formation. When the two continents split, the old rock laters remained, while the new rock layers formed on top of them. When Paleantologists found the similarity in rock formation, they found further evidence that these continents were once connected!!

Demography: 'So What?' Impact on the Future

1) What skills did you learn in this unit?

a. Ability to accurately graph numerical data.

b. Ability to read/interpret graphs

c. Using statistics to explain the past and predict the future.

2) What is the relevance of Demography to my life and how will it impact my life now and in the future?

We need to know about demography in our lives so that we can be aware of the world around us. We know that the population is increasing at a very steep rate right now, however we have reached peak child meaning by the end of this century, the population of children will stop increasing.

Population growth also has some negatives. For example, more people would need food, so we have to find more efficient ways to distribute food equally to people around the world. The impact on our environment will be very large because more and more people would be using more resources. For example, people might cut down trees because they are trying to invent a new item, but at the same time, they are harming the environment.

It will impact me and other people because we will have more advanced technology. For example, as the population increases, many more people would buy a car, however if a majority of the population had a car, then Global Warming would increase. Instead, we would probably have electric cars. There will also be more people to invent many things, and also many new ideas put out in the world for ore people to explore. We will live longer because the medical care will improve. We might even find more cures to diseases!

My Superpowers

My top power is perseverance. I feel that this is effortless in most situations for me. When anyone given a task, I do not ignore it, but I persevere until I complete it, and I give it my best shot. I think that perseverance will help me succeed because I will face many challenges. When I do, I need to face, them, not turn back. It will also help me give my best work and not just accept the task half heartedly. Creativity is also one of my strong points. I enjoy coming up with new ideas and using them in my tasks. My vivid imagination helps me because I am able to make my thoughts unique and develop them. I am grateful that I have this trait because another person might not have the same ideas as mine, and I am unique. I like to shine in a crowd, like a pebble in a beach of sand.

I wish that I had zest as one of my top 5 characteristics because I want to be able to light up a room with my energy. I do not want to live my life and accomplish nothing, but live it as an adventure. I think that this will make things seem more interesting and I will be excited to learn new things instead of ignoring all the opportunities that I receive. I think that this characteristic will also help me gain more friends because they will be interested in a person who is energetic, not a person sitting quietly in the corner of the room. I would also like to develop a better sense of humor. I this would also help me make more friends and take the obstacles that come my way casually. I think that this will open a new window in my future and help me succeed.

TCK Video and Reflection

I think that being a TCK or  third culture kid is beneficial. You get to experience and gain more knowledge about many different cultures. In our video, we explained how TCK children might get confused about where is home, and how they have an association with many cultures, but they do not feel like they belong to a certain ethnicity. We gave an example of some TCK kids in an airport and how they form an acquaintance with each other.

Science Continental Shift Post

Reflection Questions - How Old is the Ocean Floor?

  • Where are the oldest parts of the oceans?
The oldest parts of the ocean are located beside the continents. This is because in the middle of the mid ocean ridges, there are active volcanoes. These volcanoes erupt on the floor of the ocean. When the magma touches the cold ocean water, it cools creating new rock. So, the rock which was in that place before gets pushed outwards, towards the continents. So therefore, the oldest rocks are located beside the continents.
  • Do the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, and Arctic ocean basins have the same age and patterns?
Yes, they do share the same age pattern since the oldest rocks are located beside the continents. As you move outward, towards the middle of the ocean, the rocks become younger.
  • How does the age of the ocean floor compare with the age of rocks on the continents?
The continents are older than the ocean floor because some of the ocean floor gets recycled by a process called subduction. In this process, the seafloor gets recycled by sliding under the continents, and into the mantle. Therefore, new ocean floor can be formed, however on the Earth, old rock can remain for a very long time.

  • These questions were the same as the questions in your pre-test. Reflect on what answers, if any, you changed after completing these activities. What did you learn from these activities with GeoMapApp? Did you need a lot of help from friends or your parents or teacher? What do you think helps you learn new material in science class?
I think that after this activity, I understood and learned more about the ocean floor. Most of my answers changed because I initially did not know where the youngest or oldest part of the ocean was located. After looking at the maps and comprehending what they meant, I was able to answer the questions accurately. I think looking at these maps on Geomap App visually helps me learn more because I get a visual idea of what is going on. I like that we have to comprehend what we see and the questions help everything flow together making it easier to learn the new information. I did not require much help from my teachers, but I did need to clarify a few questions to make sure that I was going on the right track.

This is a picture of a few mid ocean ridges:

Perpetual Motion Video

Hi! My name is Jayashree A., and this is a video of my playing Perpetual Motion from the Suzuki Violin part one book.

Art Portfolio Blog Post

1) What was the best part of this assignment?

I think that the best part of this assignment was painting. I like blending the colors and letting my imagination flow. I enjoyed playing with the text and creating a variety of objects. This helped me because I was able to create a piece which was not plain or boring, but vivid and detailed.

2) If you could do this assignment again what would you do differently?

I would define my shapes a bit more, because when I painted my flowers, the edges got blurry. To fix this problem, I think that I should have more control over my brush. If I do this in the future, I think that I will be able to create better artwork.

Age of the Ocean Floor Pre-test

1) Where are the oldest parts of the oceans?

I think that the oldest part of the oceans are located in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans because Pangea might have been located beside or near theses oceans.

2) Do the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian and Arctic Oceans have the same age patterns?

I think that they do have the same age patterns because the oceans are somewhat connected to each other.

3) How does the age of the ocean compare withe the continents?

I think that the ocean is older than the land because the very first organisms on Earth might have lived in the ocean.

Social Media Refelctions

Social Media Reflections - Jayashree

In the present day, Social Media has a huge impact on us, and our lives. Social Media is used as a way for people to keep in touch with each other, even when they cannot meet in person. People can also socialize with their friends, and catch up on current events in each other's lives.

Social Media can be very advantageous in a superfluous amount of ways. For example, my friend posted Malala's story on facebook. It inspired me to do something for the community. Even . For example, if your best friend moves to a different country, you can continue to keep in touch using social media, such as Skype. You can catch up with other people and their lives by chatting or texting with them. You could also get an exposure to different topics on facebook or twitter.

Though Social Media can very helpful in many ways, there are also some negatives to it as well. Many people get so engrossed in Social Media, they do not realize how much time they spend on it. Many teenagers abuse their right to use social media and post inappropriate photos or text. Social media also decreases face to face connection and emotionally sharing ones feelings. Some teens and adults rely completely on their phones or electronic devices to convey their messages, so this decreases the need for face to face conversation. Also, when someone texts or posts, you do not know their emotional response, so sometimes, this can lead to misunderstanding between friends.

I am happy that I do not have a social media account because there are many risks and dangers online. For example,  someone could hack your account and gain access to all your personal information. My parents and I feel it is better for me not to have a social media account at such a young age.

If I did have a social media account, then I would create a thoughtful, intelligent, and humorous image. I like to be thoughtful and post items which appeal to me, at the same time remain lighthearted by not stressing on a topic too much. For example, I enjoy classical Indian dance, or Bharatanatyam. So, I might post an inspiring story about the story of a famous dancer!

I think that Social Media is a great tool for communocatin , however they have to remain cognizant of the risks and dangers as well!

Mathematical Reflection #1

  1. What are the common properties of all polygons?

All polygons must be a closed figure. A closed figure is when all the sides are connected, or there is no gap between the edges. The next property is that there are no curved edges, the edges have to be straight lines. If a figure does have curved edges, like a circle, then it is not considered a polygon. The next rule is that there can be no overlap of lines as demonstrated in the pictures below.

2) What does the measures in degrees tell you about an angle?

The measures of degrees tell me how far the angle is from 0 degrees. It also tells me the degrees of rotation an angle. This can be helpful not just when solving a math problem, but also in real life situations. For example, a skateboarder might say that he did a “720.” This means that he jumped and completed two rotations in the air before landing.

3) What are some common benchmark angles?

Some of the common benchmark angles include, 90 degrees (right angle), 180 degrees (straight line), 30 degrees, 60 degrees, and 45 degrees. These angles can help you when you are estimating angles. If the angle is close to one of the benchmark angles, then you can make an reasonable estimate about the angle’s size.

4) What are some strategies used to estimate angle measures?

When I estimate angles, I use the benchmark angles. When I get a clear idea of where 90 degrees is, and the angle is slightly less that 90 degrees, then I might estimate the angle is 85 degrees as shown in the picture below. When you have a clear idea of the benchmark angles, they are very useful and vital to get precise estimates.

5) What strategies can you use to deduce the angle measures from given information?
The first step to solve for angles is to know whether it is a straight, obtuse, acute, or right angle. You will know if an angle is acute because it is less that 90 degrees (right angle), however it is greater than 0 degrees. A right angle is usually indicated with a small square, instead of a curve for indicating the angle. This means that this angle is exactly 90 degrees. An obtuse angle is more than 90 degrees, but less that 180 degrees. I have drawn some examples in the picture below. After you have identified the type of angle, you know what degree range the angle is going to be in. For example, if the angle is acute, then you know the angle is between 0 degrees or 90 degrees.

6) What strategies can you use to find accurate measurements using tools?

Link for Video #1
Link For Video #2
To prove my estimates right, I use a tool called a protractor. First, you draw your vertex. Form your vertex, draw a straight line. Place the protractor on the line so that you can see the vertex from the hole in the center, your line is lined up with the lines on your protractor. If we were to draw a 20 degree angle, then I would place by pencil/pen under the 20 degree mark and make a tiny mark. Then I can draw the angle by using a ruler and connecting the vertex with the other point which I drew with my protractor. I have attached two video's demonstrating how to use a protractor.

Google Science Fair

Deepika Kurup - Photocatalic approach to purify water

A world changing invention crafted by a mere teenager has the potential to trigger a drastic change in the amount of people affected by drinking impure water.

Deepika Kurup was inspired to solve the water crisis during her visits to India. She saw some students drinking impure water from a nearby creek. She was troubled and set ambition to change this situation. Her research proves that currently, many countries are using the SODIS process. Clear plastic bottles are filled with contaminated water, and are exposed to the sun for about 8 hours. This disrupts the DNA of any harmful bacteria or germs. This is a very useful, and cost effective method, however consumes a large amount of time.

Recently, photocatalyst, such as titanium dioxide has been used to accelerate the cleaning process. A film of titanium dioxide is added on the inner side of these clear bottles. But even this process has a problem. When exposed to sunlight, this layer of titanium dioxide mixes into the water , thus making this process ineffective.

Deepika has invented a novel way to filter the toxins out of the water using a pervious composite mixture of titanium dioxide and silver. She created seven filters with different amounts of silver. (The last sample was her control sample with no titanium dioxide and silver. She then took these filters and placed methylene blue on top. She discovered that the combination of 3.85 % of titanium dioxide and 0.04 of silver (Ag) is the fastest in changing methylene blue to clear. (Her filter disrupts the harmful chemicals in methylene blue).

In her next experiment, she took sample number four and 7 (control) and passed impure water through both of them. She took the samples and set them in the sun. Her experiment proved that her filter is more effective and less time consuming than the simple photocatalytic and SODIS process.

I believe that Deepika can win the Google Science Fair because she has taken a worldwide crisis, and has come up with an effective, and less time consuming way to solve the problem. Water is a necessary element needed for human survival. For this reason, we need a pure source of it. This method can quench a large amount of people’s thirst and save thousands of lives. It can also prevent people catching diseases by consuming impure water.
